Urban Planning and Geography

A degree in geography from Marshall University is an excellent preparation for becoming an urban planner because it provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to understand the complex spatial relationships in urban environments. We teach students about the physical and social aspects of cities, including land use, transportation systems, housing, and environmental issues. This knowledge applies directly urban planning, where professionals work to create sustainable and livable communities. Additionally, geography programs provide students with training in GIS and other geospatial technologies, which are essential tools for urban planners in analyzing data and developing plans.  Consider this recent job ad for a Planner in North Carolina:  “major course work in urban planning… Experience with … GIS strongly preferred.”  The Geography Department at Marshall University offers planning courses and GIS courses as part of a well rounded education to prepare you for planning jobs.  Graduates of our programs have been hired as full-time planners!
