2021 Young Writers Day Events

A virtual Young Writers Day was held on May 7th, 2021 to recognize the outstanding West Virginia writers from this year’s contest. Students, teachers, and county coordinators gathered virtually on Microsoft Teams to participate in an opening ceremony and a variety of writing workshops!

Keynote Speaker:

Ron Sowell is best known for his role as the musical director for the internationally acclaimed Mountain Stage Radio Show which can be heard each week on 280 NPR stations nationwide. Ron is also an accomplished singer, guitar and harmonica player, performer, music producer and award winning songwriter . He has recorded 4 albums with 2 legendary West Virginia bands – The Putnam County Pickers and Stark Raven – and has 3 solo CD’s to his credit – including his popular children’s album “Opposite Day”. He has performed and toured extensively across the United States and his music has taken him to far away places like Greenland, Iceland, England, Germany, Greece, Turkey and Ethiopia.
