Huntington Area Art Society to offer summer series

The summer series of the Huntington Area Art Society kicks off this evening with a new focus: artwork created in relationship to buildings, such as stained glass and public art on buildings.
The first of three presentations, “Von Gerichten Stained Glass: An American Tradition,” will be led by guest presenter Dennis Shobe, owner and operator of Shobe’s Stained Glass, and will take place at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, at The Cellar Door, 905 Third Ave. Read More
‘Appalachian Dirt’ exhibition to open at Visual Arts Center

Titled “Appalachian Dirt” and featuring work from more than 20 ceramists from West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky, a new exhibition up at Marshall University’s Visual Arts Center aims to break the mold on the thought that ceramics is limited to pottery alone.
“‘Appalachian Dirt’ shows the breadth of how contemporary ceramists are working and, in particular, highlights how ceramists in our region are working with the medium,” said Frederick Bartolovic, associate professor of ceramics at Marshall. Read More

Artist exhibition, presentation, walking panel to be part of anthropology meeting

Students and faculty from Marshall University’s School of Art and Design will play a part in “Reinventing and Reinvesting in the Local for Our Common Good” at this weekend’s 51st annual meeting of the Southern Anthropological Association at the Big Sandy Conference Center in Huntington.
“Art and Life: An Exhibition of Work by Visual Art Majors in Marshall University’s School of Art and Design and College of Arts and Media,” will be on view in the Dogwood Room throughout the conference and will feature work by 10 visual arts seniors: Tanya Abbett, Courtney Childers, Michael Gallimore, Paige Grimaldi, Kaitlyn Hartford, Lydia Lake, Ashley Loftis, Kayla Shapley, Ashley Taylor and Eryn Wilson. The school’s director, Sandra Reed, curated the event, identifying works from senior visual art majors who are currently completing their capstone projects. The artists will be present on Friday, April 8, for a special session, “Talk with the Artists: Life and Art,” scheduled from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Read More

5th Annual National Juried Exhibition opens Jan. 11; School of Art and Design to award $200+ Juror’s Choice Award

Marshall University’s Visual Arts Center Gallery will open the spring semester Monday, Jan. 11, with the 5th Annual National Juried Exhibition, featuring 30 artists from 17 states.
As this year’s juror, Huntington Museum of Art Executive Director Geoffrey Fleming will decide who receives the Juror’s Choice Award, which boasts a $200 minimum cash award.
“I think this year’s show encompasses a variety of different media and forms that will allow any viewer to discover something that will pique their interest,” Fleming said.
Artists from the exhibition utilized media ranging from the classic oil on canvas to unconventional conglomerates, such as Benjy Davies’ “Nagasaki Nest Requiem,” which incorporates Poly-fil, chicken wire, ostrich egg, aluminum, paper and wood. Read More
