Digital Forensics

Computers and other digital devices hold a wealth of information including text, digital images, audio and video, which can serve as key evidence for solving crimes. Forensic software programs can be used to image digital storage media and the images can be analyzed using a variety of investigative software programs. Mobile phone forensics is an area that is emphasized in the forensic science courses, as well as investigation of computers and gaming devices. The opportunity to participate in hands-on experiences with investigative tools allows students to participate in mock investigations in preparation for careers in this exciting discipline. For the Digital Forensics area of emphasis, the student must complete the following courses in addition to the core curriculum:

Digital Forensics Curriculum

CFS 562 Network Forensics
Examination of techniques and tools used to investigate, search, collect, analyze and report on network based breaches and events.
3 credit hours
CFS 548 Multimedia Forensics
Course will introduce principles of multimedia forensics (images, audio, and video) and their application to cyber forensics. Practical forensics enhancement, analysis, and reporting tools and techniques are covered.
3 credit hours
CFS 567 Mobile Device Forensics
Identification, preservation, collection, analysis, and reporting techniques and tolls used in the forensic examination of mobile devices such as mobile phones, tablets and GPS units
3 credit hours
CFS 640 Adv Cyber Forensics
An advanced study of cyber forensics focusing on artifacts from a variety of evidentiary sources and environments. Topics include Windows and Apple computer systems as well as mobile and network devices.
3 credit hours
Emphasis Credit Hours 12 credit hours
