A Marshall University junior has received a Mayo Clinic Summer Research Fellowship through the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Mary Piaskowski, a biological sciences major, was selected from over 1300 applications for one of 140 spots. Piaskowski, a Proctorville, Ohio native, will receive $6,000 for the fellowship.

Dr. Howard Richards of Marshall University’s Department of Physics has developed a model for the NCAA men’s basketball tournament using nontraditional methods of physics. Richards, an assistant professor of physics, said the model is extremely simple and can be implemented using a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet.

Eighteen Marshall University faculty members have received awards through a new program to promote scholarship and creative activities.

Bill Gardner, assistant professor in the Digital Forensics and Information Assurance program at Marshall University, has been re-elected to the InfraGard West Virginia Board of Directors for a two-year term.

Seventeen Marshall University students have each been awarded $750 plus expenses through a university program started this year to promote undergraduate research and creative activities.

Dr. Wael Zatar, dean of Marshall University’s College of Information Technology and Engineering, recently participated in the 97th annual meeting of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) in Washington, D.C.

Emily Woodrum has received Marshall University’s first Dr. Marty Amerikaner Scholarship for Excellence in Clinical Psychology.

Sandra J. Reed, professor and director of Marshall University’s School of Art and Design, begins this year a three-year term as president of the SECAC, an organization dedicated to education and research in the visual arts. She was elected by members during the 73rd annual meeting in Columbus in October 2017.

The Society for Classical Studies has presented Marshall University Associate Professor Dr. E. Del Chrol with its Award for Excellence in Teaching of Classics at the college level. His teaching features “a deep commitment to and patent skills in pedagogy, conceived very broadly, including also a wide range of presentations on pedagogical issues,” as noted by the society.
