Customized Professional Development Partnerships
Marshall’s Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) is proud to offer a dynamic range of professional development opportunities designed to meet the unique training needs of academic units and departments across campus. Recognizing that teaching and learning environments are diverse and ever-evolving, CTL collaborates closely with campus partners to design and deliver targeted training sessions that empower faculty, staff, and (coming soon!) graduate students to thrive in their instructional roles.
Tailored Professional Development to Meet Specific Goals
Our approach centers on partnership and flexibility. Units and departments are invited to engage with the CTL to identify specific learning goals or areas for growth within their teams. Whether you have a clearly defined topic in mind or prefer to rely on the expertise of CTL faculty to develop relevant content, our team is ready to craft professional development experiences that align with your objectives and institutional priorities.
Varied Formats to Fit Diverse Needs and Schedules
Understanding the constraints on time and schedules in the academic environment, CTL offers three adaptable formats for professional development sessions:
- One-Time Mini Sessions (1 Hour): These concise, focused sessions provide an excellent way to introduce or reinforce a particular teaching strategy, technology tool, or pedagogical concept. Ideal for quick skill-building or updates on emerging best practices, mini sessions fit seamlessly into busy schedules without sacrificing depth or engagement.
- Half-Day Dedicated Workshops: For units seeking a more immersive experience, half-day workshops offer the opportunity to explore teaching and learning topics in greater depth. These workshops combine interactive activities, reflection, and practical application, equipping participants with actionable strategies to implement immediately in their courses or academic support roles.
- Full-Day Unconferences: Designed for extensive collaborative learning, full-day unconferences provide a flexible, participant-driven format where attendees contribute to setting the agenda. This format fosters peer-to-peer exchange, innovation, and deep dives into pressing teaching challenges or emerging trends in higher education. Unconferences encourage a vibrant, community-centered professional learning environment.
Custom Content and Expert Facilitation
When partnering with the CTL, units can specify exact training needs—whether related to inclusive pedagogy, active learning techniques, assessment design, use of educational technology, or other priority areas. Alternatively, the CTL’s experienced facilitators can propose content based on current research, institutional initiatives, and proven best practices in teaching and learning. This dual approach ensures sessions are both relevant and high-impact.
Supporting a Culture of Continuous Improvement and Innovation
Through these professional development opportunities, CTL supports the university’s commitment to continuous improvement in teaching excellence and student success. Our partnership model enables departments to build capacity and foster a culture of ongoing learning that benefits instructors and learners alike.
How to Engage with the CTL
Departments and units interested in collaborating with the CTL for customized professional development are encouraged to reach out with their training goals or questions. The CTL team will work closely with your representatives to design a session format, content focus, and delivery approach tailored to your community’s needs.

Open Forum on Course Evaluations
Want to voice your opinion about Marshall University’s Course Evaluations?
Or suggest improvements to the process?
The Faculty Senate Executive Committee established an Ad-Hoc Course Evaluation Taskforce charged to create an innovative course assessment plan that includes multiple data points and multiple types of assessment to improve student experiences and provide useful, reliable data for faculty members regarding their teaching. The Ad-Hoc Course Evaluation Taskforce, in conjunction with CTL, is co-sponsoring two open forums to obtain feedback from students and faculty, while also disseminating surveys throughout March and April 2025 to obtain feedback.
Please join us to share your input on how the course evaluation instrument, process, and data use can be improved for students and faculty in the future. Taskforce members will be available to receive your input and share preliminary survey data for discussion. Surveys will be disseminated through separate communications.
