HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Students from Marshall University’s public radio station, WMUL-FM, received five first-place awards and 13 honorable mention awards during the National Broadcasting Society/ Alpha Epsilon Rho (NBS/AERho) 28th Annual National Student Audio/Video Scriptwriting and 56th Annual Audio/Video Production Awards Competition ceremony, held March 9 near Philadelphia.
Marshall’s students competed with others from colleges throughout the United States.
“No other school won as many grand prizes or won more overall awards than WMUL-FM’s student broadcasters in the NBS scriptwriting, audio, online and academic paper categories,” said Dr. Chuck G. Bailey, professor of radio-television production and management in the W. Page Pitt School of Journalism and Mass Communications at Marshall University and faculty manager of WMUL-FM.
“Winning at this national level speaks well for Marshall University, the College of Arts and Media, and the W. Page Pitt School of Journalism and Mass Communications, as the student broadcasters of WMUL-FM consistently earn top honors in direct competition with nationally recognized colleges and universities.”
NBS was founded in 1943 to enhance the development of college and university students in telecommunication, broadcasting, cable and other electronic media. Alpha Epsilon Rho is the national honorary society composed of members selected from National Broadcasting Society (NBS) chapters.

“Men’s Basketball Prepares for the Big Dance,” written and produced by Spencer DuPuis, a junior from Leesburg, Virginia, broadcast during the 5 p.m. edition of “Newscenter 88” in March 2018.

Audio Studio or Live Performance Segment
WMUL-FM’s Classroom Concert Series, featuring Charleston’s “Three’s Company Blues – Burns Like Whiskey.” The live interview was conducted by host Austin Creel, a senior from Parkersburg. The producers were Sam Adkins, a senior from Huntington, and Michael Stanley, WMUL-FM’s operations manager from West Hamlin. The program was broadcast and posted online in November 2018.

The students who participated in this newscast were Spencer DuPuis, producer; Adam Rogers, a graduate from Milton, anchor; Makaylah Wheeler, a sophomore from Huntington, anchor; Tristan Poston, a junior from Huntington, weather; and Nick Verzolini, a sophomore from Stewartstown, Pennsylvania, sports anchor.

The 5 p.m. edition of “Newscenter 88,” broadcast Nov. 14, 2018. The students who participated in this newscast were David Adkins, a sophomore from Huntington, producer; Taylor Speight, a junior from Washington D.C., anchor; Leslie Wilson, a community volunteer from Huntington, anchor; Tristan Poston, weather; and Spencer DuPuis, sports anchor.
