HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WMUL-FM) — Being a college student comes with its own struggles, but Marshall University gives students the resources they need to control and talk about their mental health.
The Marshall University Counseling Center, located on the first floor of Prichard Hall, gives students the opportunity to discuss their mental health. “The Counseling Center offers professional therapeutic services that can assist students with mental health, academic, career and personal needs,” the Counseling Center website said.
With the help of mental health specialists, the center helps students navigate college and the stresses of it as they prepare to take on the real world after they graduate.
“We recognize that the college years are a time of accelerated growth, significant challenges and considerable stress,” the website says. “We are here to help you learn how to manage the variety of concerns that may arise during your college career.”
Marshall also offers many different therapy groups to help manage stress during the semester.
Therapy groups like Write it Out (a journaling group that helps to organize feelings in writing) and With Flying Colors (an art therapy group that helps to reduce stress) can help students with stress while also being social with other students who might be feeling the same as them.
Marshall student Kelsey Maynard, a social work major, has used these resources and said, “They have been a big help to me in managing my mental health in the past.”
Maynard said being on campus both helps and hurts her mental health.
“My mental health definitely takes a hit while living on campus because I’m so far away from my family,” she said. “It also helps it because I have to stress less about bills and money.”
When asked about why mental health is important while being a student on campus, she spoke about how mental health can correlate with physical health. “It takes a lot of effort to get up every day and manage your stress and if you aren’t properly taking care of your mental health, then your physical health could take a hit too,” Maynard said.
Maynard said that mental health is very important to her and that she will always advocate for it.
“I’ve struggled with depression and anxiety and I’m grateful that I’ve had the resources to seek help,” she said. “Some people aren’t so lucky.”
