Scholarships and Awards

Each year outstanding undergraduate and graduate students are presented with awards of distinction administered by the Department of Chemistry. Many students in the Department of Chemistry are also honored with financial awards through scholarships and fellowships. Scholarships

The following scholarships are awarded to students in the Department of Chemistry

Alumni Summer Undergraduate Research Fellow

This fellowship provides a stipend for an undergraduate student to spend full time working on a research project for the summer. It is funded by donations from our alumni.

William C. Dudley Summer Undergraduate Research Fellow

This fellowship provides a stipend for an undergraduate student to spend full time working on a research project for the summer. This fellowship is made possible by the generosity of one of our alumni.

Danielle Clark is the Dudley Undergraduate Research Fellow for 2007.

The Chang and Chung Kong Scholarship

Endowed by the children of former chemistry professor Chang L. Kong and his wife, the Kong scholarships provide funding for tuition, fees, and books to a student for two years. One of these scholarships is awarded each spring to a sophomore chemistry major.

The Brammer Brothers Scholarship

This scholarship was endowed by three brothers who were Marshall chemistry graduates in the 1950’s and is awarded annually. It provides in-state tuition and fees to a chemistry major.

Rebecca Klug is the 2007 Brammer Brothers Scholar

The Paul and Catherine Babb Scholarship

This scholarship was endowed by Dr. Daniel Babb in memory of his parents. It is awarded annually to a chemistry major and provides $1000 towards that student’s academic expenses.

Sarah Hall is the 2007 Babb Scholar

The Faculty Undergraduate Commendation Scholarship

This scholarship is endowed by royalties from laboratory manuals written by chemistry faculty. It is awarded annually to a chemistry major and currently has a value of $500.

Huan Cao is the current recipient of this scholarship.

The Gamma Eta Scholar Award

This endowed scholarship is administered by the Alpha Chi Sigma Educational Foundation and is awarded annually to a member of Alpha Chi Sigma based a combination of scholarly excellence and active participation in the Gamma Eta chapter of Alpha Chi Sigma. Members of the Fraternity may be majors in any of the chemical sciences. This scholarship currently has a value of $1000

The following scholarships and fellowships are awarded to students in the Department of Chemistry.


The Gary Anderson Scholarship
Department faculty have named this scholarship in honor of former colleague, Dr. Gary Anderson. It is awarded annually to a chemistry major and currently has a value of $500.

Brandon Murdock is the 2015 Anderson Scholar.


Alumni Sponsored School-year Undergraduate Research Experience (ASSURE)
This scholarship provides $1,000 annually to a student engaged in undergraduate research with a chemistry department faculty member.

Stephanie Broughman and Ben Coleman are the 2015 participants in this program.


Alumni Summer Undergraduate Research Fellow
This fellowship provides a $4,000 stipend for an undergraduate student to spend full time working on a research project for the summer. It is funded by donations from our alumni.

Tyler Skidmore and Stephanie Broughman are the Alumni Undergraduate Research Fellows for 2015.


The Paul and Catherine Babb Scholarship
This scholarship was endowed by Dr. Daniel Babb in memory of his parents. It is awarded annually to a chemistry major and provides $1,500 towards that student’s academic expenses.

Ryanne Brown is the 2015 Babb Scholar.


The Brammer Brothers Scholarship
This scholarship was endowed by three brothers who were Marshall chemistry graduates in the 1950’s. It is awarded annually to a chemistry major who is a West Virginia resident. This scholarship currently has a value of $500.

Benjamin Williams is the 2015 Brammer Brothers Scholar.


William Dudley Summer Undergraduate Research Fellow
This fellowship provides a $4,000 stipend for an undergraduate student to spend full time working on a research project for the summer. It is funded by donations from our alumni.

Ben Coleman is the William Dudley Summer Undergraduate Research Fellow for 2015.


Herbert Louis Eiselstein Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is endowed in the memory of Herbert Louis Eiselstein, a former Vice President of Technology, Research and Development at INCO alloys, by his family. It is awarded annually to a student who will also do research in the Department as part of the award. This scholarship currently has a value of $1,000.

Shane Kagen is the 2015 Eiselstein Scholar.
