Physics lights up bright ideas and brilliant reflections with WV Gear Up Summer Academy

Marshall University Physics recently welcomed curious young minds to campus as part of the WV Gear Up Summer Academy, a hands-on program designed to prepare 10th and 11th grade students for college life and learning.

One of the highlights of the academy was a trio of engaging workshops titled Light and Mirror – Crafting Kaleidoscopes, led by Dr. Sachiko McBride from the Department of Mathematics and Physics. Through interactive lessons and eye-catching demonstrations, students explored the science behind light, reflection, and image formation.

The hands-on fun didn’t stop at theory—each student built and decorated their own kaleidoscope to take home, combining creativity with physics in the most colorful way.

All workshop materials were generously provided by West Virginia Gear Up.
