Environmental Science students brave the elements for field research at Red River Gorge

Share

Environmental Science students from Marshall University spent the weekend at Red River Gorge conducting hands‑on field research as part of their coursework. The trip gave students the opportunity to apply classroom learning in a real‑world setting while collecting ecological data in a dynamic natural environment.

During the visit, students gathered upland data using a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers protocol, including bird and wildflower surveys within established plots. Despite rainy conditions and cooler temperatures, the group observed spring growth returning to the hillsides and gained valuable experience through direct fieldwork. The outing reinforced the value of experiential learning and highlighted the outdoors as a powerful classroom for Environmental Science education.
