Students in the Department of Natural Resources and Earth Sciences at Marshall University are taking part in the Ohio River Way Challenge, a multi‑week paddling expedition focused on environmental research and river restoration. The 23‑day journey covers nearly 500 miles along the Ohio River, beginning in Kenova, West Virginia.

During the trip, students are conducting both individual and group research projects while gaining hands‑on experience in field data collection and ecological observation. The Ohio River Way Challenge highlights ongoing efforts to promote conservation, monitor environmental health, and encourage outdoor recreation along the river corridor. An overview of the expedition is featured in an episode of Environment Matters, West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection’s YouTube series.

The College of Science looks forward to sharing updates as students continue their work and contribute to a deeper understanding of the region’s natural resources.
