Physics alumna Ellie White finds her calling in research, outreach, and teaching

Marshall University Physics alumna Ellie White (’21, ’26) has built an impressive career exploring some of science’s biggest questions while inspiring others to share her sense of wonder.

A two-time Marshall graduate, White has conducted research at the Green Bank Observatory, UC Berkeley’s SETI Research Center, and through the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program. Her work has focused largely on the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, while also leading to opportunities with NASA, the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, and astronomy outreach programs across West Virginia.

After earning her master’s degree in physics this year, White is preparing to begin doctoral studies at West Virginia University. Along the way, she discovered a passion for teaching, calling her first semester in the classroom “life-changing” and finding fulfillment in helping students develop their own curiosity about science and astronomy.

“I’m always thrilled when people are excited to learn about space or astronomy,” White said. “I think people just really like space, and that makes me happy.”
