The Chemistry Department recently welcomed the 5th grade Talented and Gifted class from Martha Elementary for an exciting morning of hands-on science activities. Hosted by Professor Laura McCunn, the visit was part of an immersive “chemistry extravaganza” designed to spark curiosity and enthusiasm for science.

The day began with outdoor bottle rocket launches using baking soda and vinegar on Buskirk Field, followed by a classroom lesson featuring self-inflating balloons. In the lab, students explored flame colors produced by different metal ions in solution, creating a rainbow of fire. The visit concluded on a sweet note with liquid nitrogen ice cream sundaes.

Sponsored by the Department of Chemistry and the Central Ohio Valley Section of the American Chemical Society, the event provided an engaging field trip experience that encouraged young learners to explore the wonders of chemistry.
