College of Science students earn top honors at Research Day 2025

The College of Science is proud to celebrate several outstanding students who excelled at the 37th Annual Marshall University Health Sciences Research Day, held Nov. 3 at the Marshall Health Network – St. Mary’s Center for Education Conference Center.

Dr. John Karickhoff Medical Innovation Award for Best Overall Presentation

  • Isha Gupta, a second-year medical student and Biology Department graduate, earned top honors for her abstract, “AKT Serine/Threonine Kinase 1 (AKT1) Regulation of N-Myc Downstream Regulated 1 (NDRG1) in Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma Cells.” The prestigious award also includes a financial prize.

Undergraduate Winners

  • Best Oral Presentation – Undergraduate Student: Lucas Stanley, Biological Science major (Mentor: Dr. Mary-Louise Risher)
  • Best Poster Presentation – Undergraduate Student: Mika McCormick, Biological Science and Biochemistry dual major (Mentor: Dr. Gary Rankin)

Our undergraduate winners are also future Marshall doctors! These seniors will graduate in May and begin medical school at Marshall in July.

This year’s event was record-breaking, featuring 180 presentations from students and trainees across medicine, pharmacy, nursing, health professions, and science.
