College of Science connects with future scientists at DOE Science Alliance

Representatives from Marshall University’s College of Science participated in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Science Alliance Sept. 22-24 at the former Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Piketon, Ohio. The annual STEM outreach event brings together high school students, colleges, universities, and industry partners to explore careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Approximately 1,500 students from dozens of schools attended this year’s program.

Marshall representatives Sara Simpson, Dr. Sean McBride, and Dr. Rosalynn Quiñones connected with about 300 students each day, sharing information about academic programs and career opportunities in the sciences. Students also participated in hands-on demonstrations focused on conservation of angular momentum and fingerprinting techniques.

Science Alliance is one of the largest STEM education events in southern Ohio, providing students with opportunities to interact with scientists, educators, employers, and college representatives while exploring possible career pathways.

The event gave Marshall’s College of Science an opportunity to spark curiosity, promote scientific discovery, and introduce students to the many educational opportunities available through the college.
