College of Science awarded $2 million NSF grant for new STEM scholars program

Marshall University’s College of Science has received a $2 million National Science Foundation grant to establish the Physical and Quantitative Sciences (PQS) Scholars Program, which will provide scholarships and student-support services for majors in chemistry, geology, physics, data science, mathematics, and statistics.

Beginning in fall 2027, the program will support three cohorts of 12 students through scholarships, mentoring, academic support, research opportunities, internships, and career preparation.

“This award is a significant investment in the students and programs of Marshall’s College of Science,” said Wesley Stites, dean of the College of Science. “It reflects the strength of our faculty and their commitment to creating exceptional opportunities for the next generation of STEM leaders.”

The six-year project is funded through the NSF Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM) program and is led by Anna Mummert, professor of mathematics, along with College of Science faculty collaborators from chemistry, geology, mathematics, and physics.
