Abjection and Empathy in Appalachian Film

Abstract:
Movies set in Appalachia frequently depict the region as a site of addiction, lawlessness, poverty, and violence. While these conditions exist throughout the United States, they tend to be overrepresented in films set in Appalachia, which can cause viewers to believe various social ills are inherent to Appalachia. In contrast, Appalachian-produced films, while acknowledging these same problems, tend to more thoroughly explore contributing causes and exhibit a greater degree of empathy for those affected by them. This lecture will examine numerous films and indicate how narrative and visual style, as well as other aspects of filmmaking, work together to produce attitudes toward Appalachians facing struggles.
