The Center for Teaching and Learning invites you to participate in a new faculty learning community for the 2018-2019 academic year. Faculty Learning Communities (FLCs) are one opportunity for faculty on the Huntington and South Charleston campuses to participate in sustained scholarly professional development. This year the CTL and President’s Commission on Diversity, Equality and Inclusion are offering a FLC on Creating Inclusive Environments While Increasing Our Capacity for Diversity.
Over the coming academic year, participants in the FLC will share a common reading experience (the 2nd edition of Diversity’s Promise for Higher Education, Making It Work by Daryl G. Smith). During our interactive meetings, we will jointly explore the broad concept of institutional diversity in the context of:
- Education and Scholarship;
- Institutional Viability and Vitality;
- Climate and Intergroup Relations; and
- Access and Success.
These contexts provide a framework that guides and contributes to our understanding of what diversity means for our institution, relationships, teaching and learning, and scholarship. Your participation will contribute to the achievement of the following outcomes and benefits:
- Presenting at the 2019 iPED Teaching Conference;
- Co-authoring publications;
- Creating an online resource library for all Marshall University faculty and administrators;
- Modifying our teaching practices; and
- Developing mid- and long-term plans for continuing our work.
FLCs meet 6-8 times over the course of the academic year for an hour and a half during each meeting. We will offer remote access so faculty from all campuses can fully participate without traveling. Please direct questions to Sherry Early at earlys@marshall.edu.
