Advanced-Level Candidate Disposition Assessment

CAEP Standard Alignment: RA.1: Content and Pedagogical Knowledge
CAEP Standard Component Alignment: RA1.1: Candidate Knowledge, Skills, and Professional Dispositions

The Advanced-Level Dispositions were approved by the COEPD Faculty Review Committee (FRC) on March 12, 2024.

The Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP, 2020), Standard RA1.1 requires that “candidates for advanced preparation demonstrate their proficiencies to understand and apply knowledge and skills appropriate to their professional field of specialization so that learning and development opportunities for all P-12 are enhanced through, in part, the application of professional dispositions, laws and policies, codes of ethics and professional standards appropriate to their field of specialization” (pg. 48). CAEP describes dispositions as the “habits of professional action and moral commitments that underlie an educator’s performance (InTASC Model Core Teaching Standards, p. 6.).

Identifying and assessing candidate dispositions is a critical element of any licensure program. Individual licensure programs at the advanced level identify and evaluate specific and observable dispositions. The College of Education and Professional Development (COEPD) at Marshall University has defined the four broad domains and the advanced-level candidate dispositions below:

The creation of a learning environment and community to promote successful teaching and learning. Advanced-level candidates of the COEPD shall:

  • Promote Evidence-Based Practices to Meet the Needs of Learners (RA1.1a, RA1.1b)
  • Use Appropriate Data to Inform Professional Decisions (RA1.1a, RA1.1b)
  • Promote a Positive Learning Environment (RA1.1c)
Candidates value all people, ideas, and experiences. Advanced-level candidates of the COEPD shall:

  • Model the Ethical Standards Expected of the Profession (RA1.1f)
  • Demonstrate a Commitment to Equitable and Inclusive Practice (RA1.1c)
  • Model Behavior that Teaches and Promotes Acceptance of Others (RA1.1c)
The Engagement of Ongoing Professional Development and Ethical Behavior. Advanced-level candidates of the COEPD shall:

  • Continue to Grow and Develop Professionally (RA1.1f)
  • Apply Theory and Current Research to Professional Practice (RA1.1f)
  • Interact Professionally with Students, Parents/Guardians, Colleagues, and Other Stakeholders (RA1.1d)
  • Model Reflective Practice (RA1.1f)
The Use of Technology to Promote Educational Advancement. Advanced-level candidates of the COEPD shall:

  • Use Technology in an Ethical Manner (RA1.1f)
  • Effectively Use Technology Resources Applicable to their Field/Discipline (RA1.1e)
  • Promote the Use of Technology to Improve Student Learning (RA1.1e)

During a capstone, internship, or practicum course, the instructor and applicable mentors/field supervisors will use an evaluation rubric to measure whether you meet, are developing, or need improvement on each candidate disposition. Evaluators will also indicate any candidate disposition not observed during the course. Candidate dispositions are evaluated based on summative assignments and/or experiences during the course, and therefore, an evaluation may not be made solely on one assignment or experience.  Candidates will not submit any assignment specifically designed for the evaluation and will not receive a separate grade.  The instructor may share their evaluation and any feedback to candidates.

The COEPD Office of Assessment will collect each candidate disposition assessment for analysis.  Only the COEPD Office of Assessment staff, the course instructor, and the mentor/field supervisor will have access to your personal evaluation results.
