Q. Am I required to see an advisor?
The College of Health Professions wants to assist you with reaching your academic goals and to avoid detours in achieving those goals. Therefore, our students have mandatory advising each semester. You must speak with an academic advisor before pre-registration so your advising hold can be removed. An advising hold is placed on your record will prevent you from registering for classes.
Q. When should I see an academic advisor?
The best time to see an advisor is before the pre-registration rush and your advisor will e-mail you to let you know when they will be ready to start seeing students.
Q. Where is the Office of Student Services?
The Office of Student Services for the College of Health Processions is located in Prichard Hall 2nd floor. The office is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Q. How do I prepare for an advising session?
Please bring the following:
- Have an idea of what classes you might wish to take the next semester.
- Make a list of questions you may want to ask.
- If you already have a schedule or partial schedule, bring a detail copy of it with you. Available on myMU.
Q. What is Pre-Health?
Students will remain as a Pre-Health student until you are accepted into a degreed program in the College of Health Professions or change your major. Pre Health consists of: Nursing 2 and 4 year, Medical Imaging, and Respiratory.
Q. What if I’m not sure of a major?
If you are unsure about which degree you want to complete, you can be admitted as a Pre-Health major. You should begin taking several of your MU prerequisites and talking with an academic advisor or faculty about careers. Q. Am I a Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, or Senior?
Freshman (0-25), Sophomore (26-57), Juniors (58-89) and Seniors (90+ hours) A junior and senior evaluation are conducted yearly. You can also refer to DegreeWorks in your MYMU.
Q. Can I double major?
Yes. You can earn a degree with more than one discipline by completing the requirements for both majors. If the two majors are in different colleges, you must secure permission from both college deans in order to pursue both majors. For administrative purposes, you will be placed in only one college and it is this college that maintains your records. You need to complete the general education requirements for the college of listed on your student records.
Q. Academic Probation?
If your Marshall GPA or Overall GPA (if you have transfer credits) falls below a 2.0, you will be placed on Academic Probation. If you are unsure on whether you are on Academic Probation, please go to your MYMU and look at your (Example) Undergraduate GPA:
Overall: 2.28
Transfer: 3.66
@Marshall: 1.23 = Probation
Q. Academic Probation?
Academic Suspension is defined as a period in which a student cannot enroll in courses at Marshall University. You will be suspended if:
- You are on academic probation and your semester GPA is less than a 2.0 or
- You accumulate or exceed the Quality Point Deficit for their GPA Hours (see below).
