What is myMU and what is an MU ID Number?

MyMU is a hub that contains links to your email, Blackboard, class schedule, Degree Works, and more (https://myMU.marshall.edu/)

When emailing or talking to your advisor, please provide your MUID Number. This is also commonly called your student ID. This number begins with 90 and then seven additional numbers. It is also important to try to email your advisor from only your Marshall email account so we can maintain your privacy.

What is meant by the term Core Requirements/Core Curriculum?

Each student, regardless of major, must complete the Core Curriculum, which is designed to foster critical thinking skills and introduce students to basic domains of thinking that transcend the disciplines. The Core Curriculum consists of the following:

Core I: 9 hours

  • 3 hours: First Year Seminar (100-level)
  • 6 hours of discipline-specific courses with an emphasis on critical thinking and active learning (100- or 200-level). Specific courses that fulfill the requirement are designated as “CT” in the course title.

Core II: 25 hours (100- or 200-level)

  • 6 hours: Composition
  • 3 hours: Communication
  • 3 hours: Math
  • 4 hours: Physical or Natural Science
  • 3 hours: Social Science
  • 3 hours: Humanities
  • 3 hours: Fine Arts

Additional University Requirements

  • 6 hours of Writing Intensive credit in any discipline at any level
  • 3 hours of Multicultural or International coursework in any discipline at any level
  • Capstone project in the major

 

What is a “hold” and why do I have one?

Holds are notes placed on your record that may prevent your registration. Holds must be resolved prior to registering for courses. Make sure you check your holds in your myMU account and talk to your advisor if you have any questions.

Common Holds-

  • New Student Hold – This hold is placed on all new student records and will be removed in August.
  • Residency Hold – Please contact the housing department to resolve this hold.
  • Advisor Hold – You are required to meet with your advisor prior to registering for next semester, please schedule an appointment with them to satisfy this hold’s requirements.
  • Academic Obligation – You may be placed on academic probation or suspension. Please contact your advisor with scheduling concerns.

How do I view my class schedule?

You can view your course schedule through myMU by logging in to the myMU portal (https://mymu.marshall.edu/) and viewing the student portal (Menu -> Students). From here, expand the Course Schedule and Grades option from the Student Self-Service group and click Student Detailed Schedule. A sample schedule is shown below, which contains detailed information about your schedule including the delivery mode (face-to-face, online, or virtual) of your courses.

Who is my advisor, and where can I find them?

You can find a list of all COHP advisors by clicking here. The staff advisors for COHP are all located on the 2nd floor of Prichard hall. If you have a faculty advisor you will need to contact them directly to find out their office hours and locations. Your assigned advisor can be found at https://mubert.marshall.edu/whoismyadvisor.php

What is FERPA?

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act protects your personal information. Under FERPA, the university may not disclose any of your student records without the written consent from the student. Students may choose to give parents or others access to their records by making them a proxy via myMU. For more information, please visit https://www.marshall.edu/student-affairs/ferpa/

How do I check my E-mail?

You can check your E-mail via myMU (https://myMU.marshall.edu/) or by downloading and installing Outlook to your mobile device or computer. See https://www.marshall.edu/it/office365/ for more including instructions on how to add the appropriate settings to your mobile device.?
