Biology plants group explores spring flora at Carter Caves Wildflower Weekend
Faculty and students from the Marshall University Department of Biological Sciences recently traveled to Carter Caves State Resort Park in eastern Kentucky to take part in the park’s annual Wildflower Weekend. Members of the Palmquist, Puppo, and Shakirov research labs spent the day observing and identifying spring wildflowers in one of the most botanically diverse areas of the region.
Wildflower Weekend at Carter Caves brings together professional botanists, educators, and students for guided hikes and hands‑on field study focused on Appalachian plant diversity. For Biology students, the event provides valuable experience in plant identification, ecology, and phenology, while reinforcing classroom learning through direct observation in the field. The visit offered an ideal opportunity to study early‑season blooms and enjoy peak spring conditions in a nationally recognized natural area.
