Colloquium: “A family of Catalan objects”

Marshall University Math Colloquium
January 30, 2013

Dr. Elizabeth Niese
Marshall University

Abstract
The Catalan numbers appear in many surprising places with over 200 known classes of objects counted by the Catalan numbers. Many of the objects counted by the Catalan numbers have connections to other areas of mathematics, such as algebra and geometry, and even to computer science. In this talk we will look at a particular class of objects, how they can be counted elegantly, and some of the connections between these objects and algebra.
