Marshall University’s Department of Sociology and Anthropology will serve as host to the 51st annual meeting of the Southern Anthropological Society April 7-9 in the Big Sandy Conference Center in Huntington. The conference is themed “Reinventing and Reinvesting in the Local for Our Common Good.”
Dr. Brian Hoey, associate professor of anthropology at Marshall and conference chair and proceedings editor for the meeting, said he hopes the three-day event will strengthen the link between Marshall and the Huntington community to help positively benefit the interests of all.
“The aim is to demonstrate practical applications of science-based ideas to address real-world problems of local relevance,” Hoey said.
While anyone is welcome to submit a proposal before Feb. 1, Hoey said the committee particularly seeks those for organized sessions, forums and special events, and welcomes papers and posters that show processes of change at the local level utilizing multidisciplinary and non-academic interpretations.
“We then imagine possible, resilient futures for the places where we both live and work,” Hoey said.

The Southern Anthropological Society is a four-field, regional organization of anthropologists in the southeastern United States founded in 1966 with an annual conference, edited volumes and a journal, the “Southern Anthropologist.”
