Abstract:
How to get students who need help to come to office hours? Herd Hours is an innovative alternative to traditional office hours that successfully addresses this question. Independent of the students prescore on the Force Concept Inventory assessment test on Newtonian mechanics, the average individual normalized gain, G, for Herd Hours students increased 2.0 – 13.1 % over their peers in the non-user control group. G provides a quantifiable measure of the material learned. Results show (i) the peak in G for Herd Hours students is approximately double the control group, (ii) the G for Herd Hours students is nearly double the expected value for traditional lecture-based introductory physics courses, and (iii) students who use Herd Hours perform better on the FCI independent of their incoming ACT scores. The structure of the Herd Hours environment will be provided with aim of inspiring implementation in other disciplines.
