Strategic Hiring Committee

Beginning November 1, 2026, Marshall University will begin a Strategic Hiring Committee (SHC) process.

This is the next phase of Operation Core Strength, is an important step for our institution, and in many ways, formalizes a process that’s already been happening. The difference now is that we’re making it more consistent, transparent, data-informed, and aligned across the university.

The premise of this work is simple: we’ve grown our way into the appropriate level of support (faculty and staff) for the current number of students we serve. Now we must make sure that every hire — whether budgeted or unbudgeted, replacement or new — is data-informed, aligned with our institutional priorities, and serves the greatest need.

This is a move to a more consistent, university-level review process to ensure our future investments in workforce best support student success, academic and operational needs, research, campus safety, compliance, and overall long-term financial sustainability.

Beginning November 1, every campus hire will require appropriate data, vice presidential approval, and university review before recruitment begins. While this will become the new standard, we’ll still work to accommodate any unique or emergency situations. When needed, our HR staff will be ready with their expertise and support.

Where to Begin the Process?

Step 1 – Decide how you want to post your position

For Academic Affairs faculty positions, you will need to begin the Herd Faculty Hiring Request Form. This form will need to be attached to the new Strategic Hiring Committee (SHC) Position Request Form. Once your Herd Faculty Hiring Request Form is complete, you will proceed to step 2.

For staff positions, you will need to decide,

  • Do you want to post the position as is? If you want to post the position as is and not making any changes, you will proceed to step 2 by submitting the Strategic Hiring Committee Request Form.
  • Do you want to make changes to the position, and possibly reclassify? If the job is significantly changing or is an older position you are reactivating that needs to be reviewed, you must first submit the Job Description Review Form before completing the SHC Position Request Form. Once the review is completed, you will then proceed to step 2 or completing the SHC Position Request Form

Step 2 – Complete the Strategic Hiring Committee (SHC) Position Request Form

This form requests position and budget information needed for the committee to evaluation the position. You will also be required to upload an org chart, job description, and Herd Faculty Hiring Request Form (Faculty positions only). This form must be approved be approved by your Vice President’s office. Please see the form and instructions listed below.
