The program, which will be at the Marshall University Medical Center, will include a featured speaker as well as presentations on Marshall University research initiatives. Projects focusing on health care disparities pertinent to West Virginia which used multiple state-of-the-art techniques including clinical informatics, outcomes, basic, clinical and translation methodologies will be discussed. Hepatitis C, obesity, metabolic syndrome and dementia will be among the topics presented.
“This year’s Research Day showcases Marshall’s intentional move to a more collaborative, multidisciplinary approach to discovery and innovation,” said Uma Sundaram, M.D., vice dean for research and graduate education at the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. “We have worked diligently to be more inclusive as we strive to grow our research enterprise.”
In addition to researchers from the School of Medicine, faculty and students from the Marshall University School of Pharmacy, Forensic Science Graduate Program, College of Health Professions and the Marshall Institute for Interdisciplinary Research are participating.
School of Medicine Dean Joseph I. Shapiro, M.D., will begin the day’s activities by welcoming participants at 8:15 a.m. in the Harless Auditorium. The welcome will be followed by oral and poster presentations throughout the day.
The guest speaker for the day’s event is Naji Abumrad, M.D., chairman emeritus and John L. Sawyers Professor of Surgery at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. Abumrad will present his lecture, “The Life of an Academic Surgeon: Persevere, Don’t Be Afraid, Explore” at 11:30 a.m. in the Harless Auditorium.
