About
The Marshall in Florence Program is a 3-week academic immersion program located in the historical city of Florence, Italy. The program is hosted by the College Arts and Media and is under the direction of CAM Dean, Mr. Don Van Horn. The program is currently in its 6th year of operation and offers educational opportunities in the disciplines of Studio Art and Art History.
Academic Details
Students have the opportunity to receive up to 3 or 6 credits of Art from Marshall University. ART 112-Intro to Visual Art, ART 220-Art in Context, ART 414-Art and Architecture of the Italian Renaissance, ART 475-Advanced Studio Sequence, Mixed Media
ART 112 is a Marshall University Core II Requirement
ART 112, Introduction to the Visual Arts, is open to all non-majors and fulfills the Core II Fine Arts requirement. This course aims to improve your visual literacy, and help you realize the overwhelming role visual culture plays in your daily life. Why sit in a classroom when you can learn about the groundbreaking art of the Italian Renaissance in person?
ART 220, Art in Context: Local/Global, is open to all majors. Ever wanted to take an introductory studio art class but couldn’t, because you are not an art major? – Well, what better place than, the birthplace of the Italian renaissance, to experience learning about how to use various art materials (sketching/drawing, water color painting, photography, etc.) to creatively document your time in Florence? The emphasis of this course will be on utilizing creative problem solving and critical thinking about what it means to experience a foreign culture through artistic processes. *no previous art-making experience required
ART 414, Art and Architecture of the Italian Renaissance, is open to both art majors and non-majors. This course will satisfy an art history elective for art majors, as well as a non-major elective for those outside of Art and Design. Studying the history of Renaissance art and architecture in the place of its birth will provide students with an experience that cannot be duplicated in a classroom setting.
ART 475, Advanced Studio Sequence: Mixed Media, is open to art majors (non-majors by permission only) (*pre-requisites waived). This course is designed for any/all emphasis areas in the School of Art & Design and will fulfill curriculum requirements either in your emphasis area or art studio elective (in consultation with your advisor). This course will instruct students in a mixed media approach to art making using the beautiful city of Florence as the backdrop and primary source of artistic inspiration. Students will create numerous artworks by experimenting with new and familiar methods/materials in response to their surroundings. Emphasis will be placed on advanced critical thinking and creative problem solving.
Program Details
The Marshall in Florence Program is led by two full-time Marshall professors from the School of Art and Design. Students and Faculty are housed in fully furnished local apartments around the city of Florence. Students are within a 40 minute commute to the local CAPA classrooms where in-class academic instruction takes place.

Students interested in participating in the CAM Marshall in Florence Program should contact the 2015 Program Teachers. You may also visit the College of Arts and Media office in Smith Hall to obtain an application and also to speak with the Program Director, Dean Van Horn.
Financial Aid & Scholarships
Students can use financial aid they have available to them from the current academic year for the CAPA Florence Program. Students must be enrolled for 6 credits in the summer term at Marshall for their financial aid to be used. The Marshall University Office of Study Abroad annually offers a few summer scholarships for Marshall students who have applied and been accepted to a Marshall summer study abroad program.
