Session Title: Developing Creative Writing Exercises for the Virtual and Online Classroom
Abstract: What happens when students writing together in a communal space and sharing that work in the creative writing classroom is no longer possible due to a global pandemic? This interactive presentation will feature teachers who have taught in both the traditional face-to-face classroom and in synchronous and asynchronous formats where they will share some of their innovative writing prompts for the online classroom and provide strategies for attendees to develop their own creative writing activities. Attendees will be expected to participate in these creative endeavors and share the work that is generated from this session.

Session Title: An Interdisciplinary Look at Teaching Communication Fluency
Abstract: Members of an interdisciplinary Faculty Learning Community (FLC) at Marshall University will synthesize their year-long discourse on teaching communication fluency, one of Marshall University’s Baccalaureate Degree Profile (BDP) Outcomes. We re-examine communication fluency as an act of exploration, moving away from treating “everything [as] an argument,” which has limited and often counter-productive outcomes for communication. Along the way, we propose pedagogical approaches for teaching communication fluency that are more than clear and proficient (i.e. easily assessed)—they also achieve greater empathy, meditation, imagination, and self-awareness, for both the student and the audience(s) they seek to engage.
