Keep Marketing HIP! High Impact Practices for Marketing Courses
Josh Keck
Assistant Professor
Business Technology Department, Mountwest Community and Technical College
Abstract:
Recently my President declared to our entire faculty “Traditional Marketing Degrees are Worthless.” HUH!? Being a new professor teaching a traditional marketing class, I took GREAT OFFENSE to this public dragging! However, I also knew he was right. Times have changed and the demands for technology-based skills far outweigh an understanding of the 4 P’s. For marketing classes to be effective, they need something more than traditional instruction out of a textbook. They need to be HIP!
To address this, I tasked my HyFlex Spring 2023 Principles of Marketing class with a Community-Based Service Learning project: organizing and promoting a litter cleanup event we called the Mountwest ‘Make It Shine’ Community Cleanup. In this session, I will share everything I learned about incorporating this HIP into the marketing classroom, discuss what did and did not work with the HyFlex delivery method, and offer additional ideas for incorporating HIPs into the broader business curriculum.
Session type: Teaching Clinic, Hybrid (virtual live stream and face-to-face)
Key words: HyFlex, HIP (High-Impact Practice), service learning, community, engagement
