Peer Review Assessment in the Classroom: Writing and Beyond

Kaitlin Ensor
Assistant Professor
Psychology Department, Glenville State University

Abstract:
Peer review is a critical component of the publication of research findings, with the expectation of feedback from those with a similar background improves the quality and rigor of the research product. There have been many successful attempts to include the peer review process in writing courses, to the benefit of student learning. While this is beneficial for courses that are require written assignments, many courses do not require written assignments that go through a revision process in a way that would allow the peer review process to be effectively enacted in the classroom. This teaching clinic demonstrates effective and ethical implementation of the peer review process in lower level, upper level, and graduate level courses. Different assessment tools will be discussed, including written papers, oral presentations, role playing exercises. The clinic uses examples from psychology and research methods courses.
