Bridging the Gap: Creating a Sense of Belongingness in the Online Classroom
Chase Lucas

Abstract:
Replicating the face-to-face classroom is what we strive for when building, designing, and instructing within the online learning environment. Challenging not only the student but more importantly, the instructor to share themselves with their peers and class. Embracing each student with what they are struggling and succeeding with is imperative. The activities that we have strategically created and planned only evoke these interactions to develop throughout the course. Creating connections hundreds of miles away from one-another is the feat that we are overcoming, in hopes of spreading these ideals of belongingness into many more courses in the future. Embracing the belongingness strategies and incorporating them in a way that evokes student’s engagement, and communication takes us one step closer to bridging the gap.
Session type: Facilitated Discussion, Face-to-Face only
