The Value of Competency-Based Learning in a Traditional Classroom

Dwight W. Heaster
Associate Professor and Chair
Business Administration, Glenville State University

Abstract:
Why are professional programs like business exploring new learning models? How can a university business program integrate traditional theory with competency-based learning? Businesses are living and breathing organism that continues to evolve and change. To stay abreast of topics, people interested in the field will need to be lifelong learners. To assist college-age students in hitting the ground running, universities should consider combining the traditional learning models of theories and concepts with the real-world application commonly found in a competency-based learning model. With this approach, students walking out of today’s business education will be better prepared to enter the market and contribute to this ever-evolving profession. The key to combining these two approaches is the curriculum. This clinic will explore how an undergraduate degree in business administration can take two very different learning models and incorporate them into the best of both worlds.
