2022 Marching Thunder Band Camp Information

Hello 2022 Marching Thunder,
Below is all the information that was sent out in an email on July 14th. I hope that this provides all the information that you are looking for at this time. The only item missing is the tentative band camp itinerary. This will be forthcoming and will be posted and sent out.
Band camp this year is running from Aug. 11th – Aug. 20th. As most of you know, we will only have about 5 full-day rehearsals out of those 9. This is because there are several Week of Welcome events in which all of our 1st year students will be taking part. These Week of Welcome events are scheduled into the itinerary for your convenience.
Here are few band camp “items of interest” I want to draw your attention to:
  • First day of camp (Thursday, Aug.11th) begins at 5pm.
  • Saturday, Aug. 13th will be a DCI Finals watch party in the band room!
  • We are working on getting some pool time for you, so please bring your bathing suit.
  • The Friends and Family performance on Aug. 20th will be in the indoor facility.
Registration for band camp will take place between 3pm and 5pm on Thursday, Aug. 11th. This is a registration for camp only and not a registration for the Marching Thunder course. Please contact your advisor to make sure you are registered for MUS 266 or 466 (depending on what year you are). Registration will be in the Henderson Center Band Office and will occur digitally. We will have a few computers on site for you to use. If you want to bring a laptop to help with your registration process, you’re more than welcome to. However, the process is all online and is designed to be done with your phone or a tablet. There will be a QR code to scan in the band office and hallway which will take you straight to the online registration.

There is a band camp fee for all members and it is broken down below. This fee covers some meals, snacks, apparel, music, and instruction for the week of camp and will need to be paid when you register on site. For all instrumentalists who do not have black marching shoes, please be prepared to be fitted for and order those when you register. Those will cost about $40 as well.
  • Instrumentalists – $85 w/out shoe order, $125 w/ shoe order.
  • Color Guard, Majorettes, and Twirlers – $45
This, you can do now! Please go to this link and fill out the online medical form  We need to have your information in the case of an emergency. Please do this as your earliest convenience. If your information changes between now and camp, simply resubmit the online form and we will delete the older version.

This information comes straight from the University housing department, of which I have very little control over. However, they have been working with us for several years and I believe this process has worked well in the past.
All students who will be living on campus, including housing student staff, must fill out the Early Arrival Form here. This includes all students who have been on campus for summer session 1 or 3. The deadline to submit an early arrival request is Aug. 1st, so please do not wait. If you do miss this deadline, contact Dr. Schletter.
You will be moving in on August 11th and should choose between the 8am-11am block or the 11am-2pm block. There is another choice, but as we are beginning our camp registration at 3pm, you should be sure to choose one of those two earlier move-in periods.
Over the last few years, we have moved to a digital (paperless) learning process. This year we will continue to use the previous apps and adding some more. Here are a few apps that you need to have on your mobile devices indicated by section:
  • Ultimate Drill Book (UDB) – All members except front ensemble.
    • Have this on your mobile device by camp. We will set this up together. You’ll want to download the UDB Pro app. (Apple here or Android here).
  • Youhere – All members
    • Just have this downloaded on to your mobile device. We’ll explain this once camp starts (Apple here or Android here).
  • Remind – All members
    • Once you download this app on your Apple or Android device, you can join the class called Marching Thunder 2022 with the class code: MUMT22. I’ll start sending out messages soon.
  • FlipFolder – All instrumentalists (winds and percussion)
    • Again, just have this app on your Apple or Android device. We will set this up together at the beginning of camp.
All members are encouraged to apply for an athletic band tuition waiver (if you haven’t already). If you are awarded a tuition waiver, this could at least cover the cost of the Marching Thunder course (about $385), however, many who apply, receive more. If you are awarded a tuition waiver, you will have nearly all marching band expenses covered for you. You can apply for a tuition waiver here

Be sure to have the following with you for camp:
  • Sunscreen – We WILL be in the sun. You should have sunscreen!
  • Water jugs – You must all have something to drink water from. We will supply cold water, but we do not supply cups. We try to limit our waste. Be sure to have something from which to drink.
  • Bathing suit & towel – We will be going for a swim during band camp. The indoor pool in the Rec Center is a shallow pool, great for hanging out, cooling off, and getting out of the sun for a bit. I encourage you all to take part in this summertime fun.
  • Hat – Please consider wearing a hat, visor, or something to protect your face (and lips – brass/woodwinds).
  • Sunglasses – This is another strongly recommended item. You know….sun.
  • Comfortable shoes for marching/moving. We are asking you to move and be athletic. You can not properly perform in flip-flops, Crocs, or shoes without laces. You must have snuggly laced athletic shoes or you will be asked to sit down. This is for your safety and for the safety of those around you.
I am truly excited about what this year has to bring for the Marching Thunder! There are exciting things happening! Here are a few…
  • We have a new, very enthusiastic Athletic Director!
  • We are in a new conference – Sun Belt Conference = more TV time!
  • We will be unveiling a new Marching Thunder Logo at band camp!
  • We are performing a side-by-side concert with the Huntington Symphony Orchestra on Sept. 10th!
  • We are performing at a Bands of America show in Ohio on Sept. 17th!
  • Tri-State Marching Championships is Oct. 22nd!
  • Check out the rest of our performance schedule here (in the right hand side bar of the website).
If you have any questions about anything at all. Please don’t hesitate to ask.
