The Department of Mathematics and Physics rolled out the welcome mat (and the grill!) for its 2025 Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program, Appalachian Mathematics and Physics Site—also known as AMPS—with a sunny cookout at McLelland Park!
Over the next eight weeks, ten undergraduate students from across the U.S.—including Alabama, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and West Virginia—will call Marshall University home as they dive into hands-on research in mathematics and physics.
This summer’s research projects include everything from binary neutron star mergers to algebraic graph theory, textile dye filtration, disease outbreak modeling, and numerical semigroup rings—all guided by five dedicated faculty mentors: Dr. Maria Hamilton, Dr. Sudipta Mallik, Dr. Sean McBride, Dr. Chanaka Kottegoda, and Dr. Aleksandra Sobieska.
The AMPS program is made possible thanks to NSF funding secured by Dr. Tom Cuchta (PI) and Dr. Stephen Deterding (Co-PI). Learn more about the program here: amps.marshall.edu
Welcome, REU scholars—we’re excited to see the amazing science you’ll accomplish this summer at Marshall!
