Session Title: Decolonizing Writing Across the Curriculum
Abstract: Racism, patriarchy, ableism, and other insidious forces can influence the ways faculty teach and assess writing. This 60-minute roundtable discussion seeks to first create a space for faculty to discuss challenges they face in teaching and assessing writing in culturally responsive and inclusive ways. Next, we will discuss how we can navigate the seemingly competing tensions that exist when teaching writing within our disciplines. Finally, we will invite faculty to share ways they are working to make writing pedagogy in their courses more culturally responsive and inclusive. This discussion seeks to serve as a necessary catalyst for change in how we think about teaching and assessing writing across our curriculum. Two broad questions will guide the discussion: How can we change the teaching of writing to be more inclusive? How can we change the assessment of writing to be more inclusive?
