The School of Music announces a new major in Commercial Music and a minor in Music Entrepreneurship These new offerings begin in the Fall 2022 semester. The Commercial Music major will provide students an opportunity to expand upon their liberal arts studies in music to include popular music, music business, recording techniques, and business studies.

Jazz Audition

Marshall University will host a joint recital of the guest group Radford University Guitar Quintet, under the direction of Dr. Robert Trent, and the Marshall University Guitar Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Júlio Ribeiro Alves.

Marshall University’s campus/community choral ensemble, the Choral Union, will present its end-of-semester program, “The Music of Living,” at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 29, in Smith Recital Hall. Marshall University and the Nu Jazz Agency will present the Ellis Marsalis International Jazz Piano Competition June 22-23 on Marshall’s Huntington campus. Among the largest competitions of its type in the world, the competition will be a triennial event in Huntington, offering an awards package of more than $200,000 in cash and prizes.

Marshall University will host world-renowned jazz drummer Jeff Hamilton on its Huntington campus for a three-day residency with Marshall’s Jazz Studies program. His visit will conclude with a performance with the MU Jazz Ensemble I at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, in Smith Recital Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.

The Marshall University School of Music continues its Spring 2018 series of MUusic Mondays lectures at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 2, with a presentation titled “The Mysteries of J. S. Bach’s Chaconne” by Dr. Elizabeth Reed Smith, professor of violin.

The Marshall University School of Music will present a two-day residency program with artists David Moreau and Melissa Grey, who make up the duo l’Artiste Ordinaire and create sound-based performances pulling together music, visual art, science and creative technologies. Marshall University’s contemporary a cappella ensemble, 3rd Avenue, will present its Spring Concert at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 14, at Smith Recital Hall on the Huntington campus.
