Paul and Dixie Nicely Scholarship

The Marshall University Foundation Inc. has established an endowed fund known as the Paul H. and Dixie 0. Nicely Scholarship for the Marshall University Forensic Science Center. This fund was amended in February 2012 to change the name from the Paul H. Nicely Scholarship to the Paul H. and Dixie O. Nicely Scholarship for the Marshall University Forensic Science Center. This fund was established by Tamela J. White to honor her father and her mother.

The recipient for this renewable award shall be a graduate Forensic Science Center student from West Virginia or a qualified metro-student with high academic performance and financial need. Two potential recipients shall be nominated by the Director/Assistant Director of the Forensic Science Center in cooperation with the Office of Student Financial Assistance. In making the nomination, the Director/Assistant Director of the Forensic Science Center shall give first preference to students working on projects that promote sustainability and growth of the West Virginia metro economy. Tamela J. White, or her designee, shall make recommendations to the Office of Student Financial Assistance as to which of the students shall receive the award. The funds may be used by the recipient for tuition, books, presentations and/or projects sponsored by and through the Forensic Science Center Graduate Program.

The Terry W. and Sandra J. Fenger Scholarship

The Marshall University Foundation Inc. has established a fund known as the Terry W. and Sandra J. Fenger Scholarship for the Marshall University Forensic Science Center. This fund honors Dr. Terry W. Fenger’s longstanding leadership and contributions to forensic science education and research, alongside the support of his wife, Sandra J. Fenger.

Dr. Fenger has served as Director of the Forensic Science Center since 1994, overseeing the nationally accredited (FEPAC) Forensic Science Master of Science Degree Program, the DNA testing laboratory, and the Digital Forensics section. With a PhD in Microbiology from Southern Illinois University and postdoctoral research experience at LSU Medical Center, Dr. Fenger has contributed extensively to forensic science through instruction, research, and service. His academic interests span DNA technologies, digital forensics, bioterrorism, and crime scene investigation, and he has presented his work at numerous national forums.

The recipient(s) of this annual award shall be a full-time graduate student majoring in Forensic Science within the College of Science. The award is renewable for up to two years (four semesters), contingent upon the recipient maintaining good academic standing. Alternatively, the award may be granted for a single year. Selection and renewal of the award shall be made by the Dean of the College of Science, or at their discretion, by the Forensic Science Department, in cooperation with the Office of Student Financial Assistance.

J. Edgar Hoover Scholarship

Since the founding of The J.Edgar Hoover Foundation, over three and one half million dollars have been distributed for scholarships, grants for education, as well as legal and professional law enforcement training. Scholarships and grants are provided to selected college and university students pursing undergraduate and graduate degrees. These scholarships are presented based on a combination of merit and need, including individuals who may not have an opportunity for higher education. Many recipients are pursuing degrees in law and law enforcement related studies. The J. Edgar Hoover Foundation has awarded many scholarships to the sons and daughters of special agents of the FBI, as well as state and local law enforcement officers.

Each year, a Scientific Scholarship in the amount of $25,000 is awarded to a deserving candidate. This award is conferred based on a candidate’s interest in pursuing a forensic science related career in law enforcement.

The Foundation’s Board of Directors solicits candidates for the Scientific Scholarship from colleges and universities with accredited forensic science programs. The candidates are then reviewed during the annual meeting of the Foundation’s Board where the selection of a deserving recipient is made. The Scientific Scholarship program has been in effect since 2001 and to date over $250,000 has been awarded.

ASCLD Scholarship Program

ASCLD awards scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students in forensic science on an annual basis as approved by the Board of Directors. Scholarships are generally awarded in the amount of $1,000; however, the number and dollar amount of scholarships will be determined annually after the availability of funds is determined.

At least three ASCLD members who are not affiliated with institutions from which students are applying will evaluate the pool of applicants. The subcommittee’s recommendation will be presented to the Board of Directors for approval.

Applicants must be a junior or senior in a baccalaureate program or a graduate student (masters or doctorate) at an accredited university who is pursuing a degree in forensic science, forensic chemistry, a physical or natural science. Applicants from FEPAC accredited programs will be given additional consideration. High school students or college/university students in their freshman or sophomore years will not be eligible for application. As the scholarship program was created to provide opportunity to students intending to enter the forensic field, scholarships will not be granted to current forensic science laboratory employees pursuing graduate degrees.
