Changing UPN and SMTP from @live.marshall.edu to @marshall.edu

Share

The following is a message from Information Technology to all freshman students and has been approved by the IT Executive group:

Marshall University Information Technology (MUIT) is working to consolidate all users’ UserPrincipalName (UPN) and primary email addresses to be user@marshall.edu.

If you are receiving this email communication it is because either your UserPrincipalName is currently in the format of user@live.marshall.edu or your primary email address is user@live.marshall.edu.

What is happening?

On Monday, November 15, 2021, MUIT will be converting your UserPrincipalName (username used to log in to Marshall resources) from user@live.marshall.edu to the new format of user@Marshall.edu.  During this conversion process, if your current email address is in the format of user@live.marshall.edu that will also be converted to the preferred format of user@marshall.edu.   We will make sure to retain your user@live.marshall.edu email address as a secondary address on your email account so that you can still receive email addressed to that address but from the conversion date forward all of your new outbound email will be addressed in the format of user@marshall.edu.

How will this affect me?

The UserPrincipalName conversion should be essentially seamless to most users other than when logging into resources moving forward you will use the new format of the username as user@marshall.edu.  Most email clients should automatically convert and adjust to the new UPN and Email address change without having to be reconfigured.  However, if you experience any issue sending or receiving email, the easiest fix would be to remove the email profile from your email client (on your computer and/or phone) and then add it back using the new user@marshall.edu format.

What action do I need to take?

Mail:    (disclaimer:  even though most of the below listed email clients should not need to be reconfigured, depending on how or which protocol your account was initially added, you may still need to remove and re-add your email profile to get mail to work after the change)

  • Outlook On The Web (outlook.office.com) will not require any changes.
  • Outlook Mobile App on IOS 10+ or Android should automatically adjust without having to remove and re-add the profile.
  • Outlook 2016 or newer should  automatically adjust without having to remove and re-add the profile.
  • iOS 11.3.1 or newer native mail app should automatically adjust without having to remove and re-add the profile.
  • iPadOS 13.1 or newer native mail app should automatically adjust without having to remove and re-add the profile.
  • MacOS 10.14 or newer native mail app should automatically adjust without having to remove and re-add the profile.
  • Android OS 8 or newer with GMAIL app should automatically adjust without having to remove and re-add the profile.
  • Android native mail app will need to be removed and a new mail profile will need to be created.
  • Samsung native mail app on Android 11 or newer should automatically adjust without having to remove and re-add the profile.
  • Mozilla Thunderbird v78 or newer should automatically adjust without having to remove and re-add the profile.
  • Older versions of Android or iOS:    Remove the account and re-add the profile to the mail application.

PLEASE NOTE:  as of October 1, 2022, Exchange Online will no longer support older non-Modern Authentication mail clients.  It is highly recommended that you take this opportunity to switch to a modern auth mail client such as the latest versions of Outlook, Gmail, Mac/iOS/iPadOS mail, Thunderbird, or Windows Mail.

Microsoft Authenticator app:

All devices should auto-update the UserPrincipalName of the user in the app without needing to be reconfigured.

Expectations and considerations:

If you have an account somewhere that requires you to send email to it via the user@live.marshall.edu address for access or support, be sure to update it with the new email address of user@marshal.edu before this change as you will not be able to send as user@live.marshall.edu after this conversion.
