The sound of Marshall University’s jazz studies program is thundering east to the capital city with a series of jazz combo performances on Oct. 21, Nov. 18 and Dec. 2 at Elk City Records on Charleston’s West Side.

The Marshall University School of Music’s MUsic Mondays will present the second lecture of the fall series at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 16, at the Cellar Door, 905 3rd Ave., Huntington. Beginning this month, visitors to The Press Club can enjoy the sounds of jazz from Marshall University’s School of Music every other Wednesday at 8 p.m. This month, the performances will take place Oct. 4 and 18.

The Marshall University School of Music will present Dr. Michael Stroeher, trombone, and Dr. Johan Botes, piano, in a faculty recital at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, in Smith Recital Hall, located at the corner of 3rd Avenue and Hal Greer Boulevard, Huntington.

The Marshall University School of Music’s lecture series, MUsic Mondays, returns to The Cellar Door, 905 3rd Ave., Huntington, at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 18. This year’s series features two interlocking themes: “Music Faculty Favorites” and “Music and National Identity.”

Dr. Wendell Dobbs and Dr. Júlio Ribeiro Alves are back for another year of performances as the Violauta Duo, but their performance at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, is slated to be particularly special as it will mark the first in Smith Music Hall since the building was renovated over the summer.

Dr. Susan Tusing, director of the School of Music, said she is acclimating to her role at Marshall University since joining the family in July. Dr. Júlio Ribeiro Alves, a faculty member of Marshall University’s School of Music, will perform a solo guitar recital at 7.30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, at the Jomie Jazz Forum on Marshall’s Huntington campus.

The Marshall University Choral Union begins open rehearsals at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21, in room 150 of Smith Music Hall on Marshall’s Huntington campus.

More than 100 West Virginia students between their sophomore and junior years have been immersed in the Governor’s School for the Arts at Marshall University. The audition-based school began June 25 and will end July 15.
