Travis Donahoe, a Marshall University senior who is double majoring in Management and Public Health, has been named as an alternate for the Gates Cambridge scholarship. The scholarship is highly competitive and offers winners the opportunity to pursue their graduate degree at the University of Cambridge, along with access to a prestigious alumni network. Travis, originally from Huntington, WV, is a member and former president of Alpha Kappa Psi, Marshall’s professional, honorary business fraternity, and has been involved with Faith in Action (River Cities) in the past. He also currently works as for Marshall University’s Center for Business & Economic Research. A member of the Honors College, he also has frequently worked as a research assistant with Marshall faculty Dr. Monika Sawhney and Dr. Rishav Bista on projects related to public health in Appalachia. His graduate school plans involve researching the epidemiology of chronic diseases in Sub-Saharan Africa, through which he hopes to explore risk factors for chronic diseases in local communities so as to better inform preventative interventions and policy decisions. Two Lewis College of Business faculty members, Richard U. Agesa and Uday Tate have been recognized with high honors. Richard U. Agesa, professor of economics, has been selected as the Elizabeth McDowell Lewis Endowed Chair. The Endowed Chair was bestowed on Professor Agesa based on his sustained research in quality nationally and internationally recognized economic s journals, his passion for teaching, and his dedication to service in the Lewis College of Business and Marshall University. Marshall University’s Lewis College of Business in partnership with the City of Huntington, the West Virginia Small Business Development Center, and Generation Huntington presented a workshop on September 25th from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm for individuals in the community who are thinking about starting their own business. The one-day event was designed to help those thinking about starting a business avoid costly mistakes and learn how to present their ideas in order to obtain investor funding. “Marshall University wants to support local Entrepreneurs and those considering starting up a business. The Lewis College of Business recently filmed its very first Passing the Leadership Baton Series video. This first inaugural filming was with students Duncan Waugaman and Isabelle Rogner interviewing Gary White, Interim President of Marshall University. Approximately 30 students, faculty, and other business leaders attended the filming. The video will be released after it has been professionally edited. Passing the Leadership Baton Series is series of recorded interviews between the Hall of Fame (HOF) inductees and current Marshall students on various leadership topics. Since 1994, we have inducted Marshall alumni who are the best of the best of Marshall Sons and Daughters to celebrate their life-long success and contributions. We are extremely proud of their achievements and would like to have them share their experiences and stories with our currently students. Interested in being a part of the 2015-2016 Student Advisory Board? The Lewis College of Business is currently in search of motivated student leaders for its 2015-16 Dean’s Student Advisory Board. The board will consist of undergraduate and graduate students selected to serve as the voice of the College’s student population and to serve as a liaison between the student body and administration. The Dean’s Student Advisory Board provides students a forum to voice their needs, concerns, and suggestions as they pertain to future planning and decision making within the College. It also allows students a chance to interact with Lewis College of Business stakeholders. Meetings will be held once (twice) a month to discuss leadership and volunteer opportunities, assess College and community needs, and work on projects that affect the student body and community.
