Biography

Don Capener began his role as dean at Marshall University- Lewis College of Business in 2023. Prior to joining Marshall, Don successfully led Utah Valley University satellite campuses in Heber and Lehi as dean of professional studies. Dr. Capener also served as Associate Provost and Dean of Graduate Programs in the Woodbury School of Business. 

Don Capener was selected as dean at Jacksonville University- Davis College of Business in 2011. Under his eight-year tenure as dean, graduate enrollment tripled, 13 international collaborations were started, and a Doctor of Business Administration was established.  Capener was a recognized business leader and assembled an outstanding board of advisers from among the top business leadership in North Florida. Prior to spending five years as a Vice President and six as a marketing professor and business department chair at Monmouth College in Illinois, Dean Capener worked in executive roles at Leo Burnett and Reebok. Dr. Capener has corporate experience as a CEO including his own firm Capener Walcher-San Diego. A serial entrepreneur, Capener founded Above the Rim Hoopwear with his brother Robert. He was the 7th employee and VP- Marketing at Netcentives in San Francisco which he helped take public in 1999.  

Don is a recognized thought leader internationally on LinkedIn. His recent scholarly publications include 2023 publication in The American Journal of Economics & Sociology featured Valuation effects of earnings management on hotel firm value and the 2018 Highly Commended Award from Emerald Publishing for his work on the policy topic of Crowding Out-The Impact of Federal Budget Deficits on Interest Rates for New Bond Issuance. He earned a PhD from the International School of Management in Paris- France, a MBA from the Thunderbird School of Global Management in Arizona, and a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Capener is fluent in the Japanese language and an avid traveler and cultural linguist.
